Wittenberg Survives Close One With Allegheny

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - For the second straight game, the Wittenberg University Tigers did just enough to win an important home game, this time overcoming a stern challenge from North Coast Athletic Conference rival Allegheny to win 62-55. The win improved Wittenberg to 6-5 overall and 2-0 in the NCAC, while Allegheny fell to 3-8 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

Wittenberg fell behind early, rallied to take as much as a seven-point lead midway through the first half before seeing that lead evaporate going into the locker room tied at 31. In the second half, the game was even streakier, including runs of 10 or more consecutive points on three occasions, two by the Tigers and one by the Gators. A fourth scoring streak wound up being the difference as the Tigers broke a 43-43 tie at the 9:28 mark with three straight points from guard Alison Nahrup (Loveland, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame). Wittenberg went on to score eight straight points to claim the advantage for good.

The Tigers shot under 40 percent again, but they did the little things and made enough shots at the critical moments to hold off the Gators. Senior forward Geri Woessner (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) had her best game in two years with 13 points and eight rebounds. Senior guard Amber Bishop (Batavia, Ohio/Batavia) scored 11 points, grabbed four rebounds and distributed three assists in 27 minutes off the bench. And senior forward Haley Warden (Loveland, Ohio/Indian Hill) finished with eight points and 10 rebounds, while Nahrup added a career-high eight points and three rebounds.

Allegheny picked up 16 points and 10 boards from Meredith McDonough and 13 points from Jessica Kankoski. The Gators, the last team to beat Wittenberg in NCAC regular season action back in February 2002, lost to Wittenberg for the fourth straight time spanning the last two seasons.
