Wittenberg remains perfect with 65-57 win over Kenyon

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Kenyon Ladies never make things easy on an opponent. They play a bruising, physical, defensive-oriented style that forces opponents to play to their pace. That said, chalk another up for the resourceful Wittenberg Tigers, who overcame a game challenge from visiting Kenyon to claim a 65-57 win.

The Tigers improved to 12-4 overall and 7-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference with the victory, their seventh in the last eight games. The difference in the game was that Wittenberg forced 30 Kenyon turnovers with a suffocating full-court press. All of the other statistics reflect how even the game really was throughout.

Wittenberg got out to an early lead, but in what would become a theme, the Tigers couldn't shake the Ladies, who fell to 8-7 overall and 3-4 in the NCAC with the defeat. Kenyon made a three-pointer just before the halftime buzzer to take a 28-27 lead into the locker room, but Wittenberg came out firing to start the second 20 minutes, scoring the first nine points to take what would turn out to be an insurmountable lead. Kenyon did scratch back into a tie at 52-52 with 6:17 remaining in the game, but Eileen Wittman missed a free throw and Wittenberg responded with an 8-3 run to open the lead back up.

The Tigers were paced offensively by senior forward Tiffany Keller (Massillon, Ohio/Tuslaw), who scored a season-high tying 18 points. Senior guards Kate Rolf (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Carroll) and Stephanie Campbell (South Charleston, Ohio/Southeastern) added 12 points apiece in the winning effort.

Wittenberg returns to the HPER Center court on Saturday with a 2 p.m. home date opposite Wooster. The game will be broadcast on radio by WULM, and at 8 p.m. that evening, viewers can tune in to a replay of the Kenyon game on Time Warner Cable. Check your local listings for the channel in your area.
