In the opener of what appears to be a wide open tournament, the team with the most games under its belt came away with a convincing opening round victory. Marian College improved to 9-5 on the season with a 58-40 win over Calvin College, which fell to 5-4.

Marian received significant contributions from a variety of players, with guard Amanda McIntosh doing the most damage. McIntosh was 6-of-11 from the field in the game and 4-of-4 from the free throw line for a game-high 17 points. She finished with a double-double, also collecting a game-high 10 rebounds. Joining her in double figures was Megan Dean with 10 points and five rebounds off the bench.

Calvin was paced by eight points and eight boards by forward Emily Beard. Also scoring eight points in the game for Calvin, which fell behind 26-15 at halftime and 44-21 midway through the second half, was guard Tricia Dyk. Tara Bergsma came off the bench to snare eight rebounds to tie for team honors in that category.

Wittenberg University (6-3) def. College of Mount St. Joseph (5-8)

The host Wittenberg University Tigers grabbed the lead early and never let go. The Tigers won their 13th consecutive first round Kiwanis-Wittenberg Holiday Classic game by a final score of 62-52 over the College of Mount St. Joseph.

Leading the charge for the Tigers, who pulled out to a comfortable lead midway through the first half and never allowed the Mountie Lions within eight points in the second 20 minutes, was junior guard Stephanie Campbell with 15 points. Kate Rolf finished with nine points and nine rebounds, while Jill Swary contributed nine points and eight rebounds.

For Mount St. Joseph, two players scored 14 points each, guard Emily Day and forward Tricia Wiant off the bench. Center Kelly Ruehl chipped in with 10 points.

Consolation Game

Mount St. Joseph def. Calvin College

The Mount St. Joseph Lions weathered several late runs by a pesky Calvin team to claim third place in the 2001 Kiwanis-Wittenberg Holiday Classic. The Lions, who improved to 6-8 on the season, pulled out to several 10-point second half leads before eventually winning 54-52.

The Lions, the tallest team in the tournament with four players over six feet in height, were paced offensively by guard Kori Strange, who led all scorers with 17 points. She also finished with four assists and four steals. She was supported by forward Virginia Grace, who chipped in with eight points and six rebounds.

Calvin, which fell to 5-5 on the season, was paced by forward Emily Beard's 16 points and 12 rebounds. She was backed by forward Liz Sietsma, who finished with 10 points and four rebounds. The Knights shot just 37 percent from the field, however, and couldn't overcome 25 turnovers in addition.

Championship Game

Wittenberg (7-3) def. Marian (9-6)

The Wittenberg University Tigers captured the championship of their tournament for the first time since 1998 with a hard-fought 70-60 win over Marian College.

The Tigers, who improved to 7-3 on the season, won for the second straight time in the 2001 tournament with opportunistic offense and a scrappy defensive effort. Wittenberg was paced offensively by junior guard Stephanie Campbell, who hit for 18 points and distributed three assists and was named Tournament MVP for her efforts. Junior guard Kate Rolf also was named to the all-tournament team and finished with 16 points and six rebounds.

Marian, which fell to 9-6 overall, was paced by all-tournament team choice Amanda McIntosh, who knocked down 9-of-16 shots from the field to finish with a game-high 19 points. Megan Dean came off the bench to add 13 points and Shanie Smith finished with 11 tallies.
