Softball falls to Emory, Maryville in doubleheader

MARYVILLE, Tenn. — The Wittenberg softball team closed out its four-game set in the Maryville Classic on Sunday with a 10-2 loss to Emory in five innings and a 4-3 defeat to Maryville.

The Basics

  • Records: Wittenberg (2-2 overall), Emory (3-2 overall), Maryville (7-4 overall)
  • Venue: MC Softball Complex - Maryville, Tenn.
  • This was the second straight day that Wittenberg faced Emory and Maryville in a doubleheader. On Saturday, the Tigers defeated Emory 5-4 and got an 11-9 win over Maryville.

Stat Leaders - vs. Emory

  • Sophomore Meghan McCans (Arcanum, Ohio/Arcanum) led the Wittenberg offense with two hits, one RBI, one run scored and one steal.
  • Senior Julia Burch (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) had one hit and scored one run.
  • Senior Hanna Ecker (Heath, Ohio/Heath) tallied the Tigers' lone extra-base hit of the game with a double.
  • Senior Kira van Ravensberg (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista) got the pitching start for the Tigers and allowed four earned runs on nine hits and one walk while striking out one in 4.1 innings.
  • Ashley Chu led the Emory offense with three hits and two runs scored, and Mackenzie Duford pitched all five innings and tallied four strikeouts.

Game 1 - Emory 10, Wittenberg 2 (5 inn.)

  • Wittenberg's game against Emory ended early via the run rule, as the Eagles took an eight-run lead with five innings having been played.
  • The Eagles opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first inning, but the Tigers answered quickly to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single from McCans and an RBI groundout from sophomore Kayla Drake (Wilmington, Ohio/Clinton Massie).
  • Emory tied the score at 2-all in the top of the second and took the lead for good with a four-run fourth inning that began with a solo home run.
  • The Eagles closed the scoring with a four-run fifth frame.
  • Emory out-hit Wittenberg by a 12-4 margin and committed just one error to the Tigers' four.

Stat Leaders - vs. Maryville

  • Burch led the Wittenberg offense with three hits and one run scored.
  • Ecker added one hit and two RBIs.
  • McCans tallied one hit and one RBI and scored one run.
  • Sophomore Julia Hall (Powell, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) got the pitching start for the Tigers, allowing one run on six hits and one walk while striking out one over 3.2 innings.
  • Brecca Williams paced the Maryville offense with four hits and one RBI, while Megan Ackerman earned the win in the circle to improve to 5-1 on the season.

Game 2 - Maryville 4, Wittenberg 3

  • Wittenberg opened up a 3-0 early on courtesy of a 2-RBI single from Ecker in the first inning and an RBI bunt single from McCans in the second.
  • The Scots got on the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning and ended up taking the lead with a three-run sixth frame that included two RBI sac flies and an RBI single.
  • Trailing by one in the top of the seventh, the Tigers got a two-out single from Burch, but McCans grounded out to end the game.
  • The Scots finished with an 11-7 edge in hits, and each team committed two errors.

  • "It was a great weekend to be on the dirt and compete against Maryville and Emory for our season opener. Both are solid programs. Splitting the series with both programs gives us a good understanding of where we are and where we need to be. We will work on the areas we need to improve on this week, and we are looking forward to The Spring Games in Florida next week."

Records & Milestones

  • Wittenberg is now 1-1 all-time against Emory and 1-2 all-time against Maryville.
  • Burch has 112 hits and 23 steals in her career. She is 18 hits and two steals shy of breaking into the program's all-time top 10 in those categories.
  • Ecker needs 10 hits to reach 100 for her career. She also has 53 RBIs in her career, which is 25 shy of joining the program's all-time top 10 in that category.
  • In the circle, van Ravensberg has 20 career wins, which is tied for 10th in program history. She also has 87 career strikeouts, which is 19 shy of breaking into the program's all-time top 10 in that category.
