Tigers Split The Day With Northland & Aurora

Clermont, FL – The Wittenberg softball team split the day from The Spring Games, taking down Northland College, 12-4 to start the day. The Tigers battled in game two against Aurora University, falling short in a late innings comeback effort, 6-5. The Tiger offense posted 24 hits on the day with 15 coming in the first game against Northland College.

GAME ONE

Three Tigers tallied three hits to get the day started with leadoff hitter Elise Freeland going 3 for 4, including three RBI's. Hanna Ecker and Briana Busic each tallied three hits apiece, driving in a combined three runs for the Tiger scoring effort. Julia Burch and Diana Quevedo would add a pair of hits each for the Tigers on the day. Quevedo logging a double and a triple with each of her hits. Wittenberg got the offense rolling in the first inning, putting up two runs in the top half of the first inning. Holding a 6-1 advantage after five, the Tiger defense was set to hold off a Northland comeback after putting up three runs in the fifth. Wittenberg found their offensive groove with back-to-back double from Burch and Ecker in the sixth inning, extending their lead to 8-4. A triple from Freeland brought around two Tiger runs in the top of the seventh. One final extra-base hit from Clara Andersen drove in Burch for the final Tiger run of game one. Samantha Zungri picked up her second win of her collegiate career with another seven-inning, complete game, allowing 10 hits and striking out two.

GAME TWO

The Tigers played through a little bit of rain during the first two innings of game two, matching the Spartans from Aurora's two runs in the first inning. Once getting through the second, game two would go into a weather delay, after Aurora posted three runs taking a 5-2 advantage. Being held scoreless throughout the next four innings, Wittenberg would start their comeback in the bottom half of the sixth inning. Quevedo reached on the Spartans error allowing Andersen to cut the Aurora lead in half at 6-3. The Tiger comeback effort would come up just short in the bottom of the seventh inning, after a pivotal triple from Freeland. She would come in to score as Burch would reach on the Aurora fielding error. Another single up the middle by Ecker would bring around Burch for the final Tiger run, as the Spartan defense would go on to get the final out.

The Tigers will return to action on Thursday, March 10 taking on John Carroll University at 11:00 a.m. and Roanoke College 1:15 p.m. from The Spring Games in Leesburg, FL. Wittenberg will conclude competiton in the Sunshine State on Saturday, March 12 taking on Geneva College at 9:30 a.m. and Rowan University at 2:00 p.m.
