Tigers Drop Doubleheader On The Road At DePauw

Greencastle, IN – Wittenberg University softball returned to action on Wednesday evening, traveling to DePauw University for a two-game set. Wittenberg took a game from nationally ranked DePauw earlier in the season, before falling in both games to open the North Coast Athletic Conference series. DePauw took game one by a final of 8-2 before moving on to take game two 8-5. Wittenberg collected 11 hits on the day, with Elaina Adams leading the offensive charge, finishing 3 of 5 from the dish with an RBI and a run scored.

Game Breakdown

DePauw broke the scoring open in the first inning by putting up three runs. The home team added one more to their advantage in the second. Wittenberg cut the DePauw lead in half in the top of the third, with a Julia Burch single to the left side, bringing home Adams. Aggressive baserunning by Elise Freeland brought the score to 4-2, as Freeland swiped her 17th stolen base of the season. DePauw added to their lead in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings as Wittenberg was unable to find the offensive spark.

Wittenberg broke the scoring open in game two, putting up a run in each of the first two innings. An RBI single from Clara Andersen, scoring Freeland for the first run. Adams executed the bunt single in the second inning, putting Wittenberg ahead 2-0. After DePauw knotted things up at 2-2 in the bottom half of the second, Audra Ledbetter pushed across the third Wittenberg run. Megan Niswonger tied the game for Wittenberg in the fifth inning, with an RBI single up the middle, scoring Alex Gibson. A three-run fifth inning by DePauw gave the home team the advantage with just six outs remaining for Wittenberg. A failed pickoff attempt by DePauw in the sixth, allowed the final Wittenberg run to cross.

Wittenberg will return to action on Saturday, April 17, hosting DePauw for a doubleheader and celebrating Senior Day from Doughman Dillahunt Field, the first pitch is set for 1:00 pm.
