Tigers Drop NCAC Road Opener At Wooster

Wooster, Ohio – The Wittenberg University softball team opened up NCAC action from the road with a trip to the College of Wooster on Wednesday evening. The Tigers fell in both games on the day, going down in game one 6-2, before dropping the final game of the series in a hard-fought battle 7-4. Wittenberg kept pace with the Wooster offense as the Tigers logged 15 hits to the Scots 18 on the day. Elise Freeland kept her hit-streak going on the road with an RBI single in game one for the Red and White, following up three hits in four plate appearances and finishing the day with a run scored and two RBI's.

Game One Breakdown

Wittenberg battled in game one, as Wooster took the early 1-0 advantage after the first inning. Missy Lee reached first on the Wooster throwing error, allowing Nikki Hawkins to come home to bring things back to even at 1-1. Wooster regained the lead in the fourth inning with three runs to take a 4-1 advantage over the Tigers. Freeland tallied her first hit of the day with her RBI single to score Aubrie Stillings, but it would not be enough to overcome the Wooster lead.

Katelyn Niswonger went the distance in game one, putting in six innings of work with nine hits allowed and striking out two.

Game Two Breakdown

Lee put the Tigers on the board first in the third inning with some aggressive base running and advancing home on the Wooster throwing error. Wooster followed up with six runs in the fourth inning, and one more in the fifth. Wittenberg would once again come home to score on some heads-up baserunning, as Freeland scored on the wild pitch. With one final at-bat, Lauren Buelow scored Brooke Dill with an RBI double to left field to cut the Wooster advantage to 7-3. Freeland pushed the final Tiger run across with an RBI single to center, bringing home Buelow.

Mary Britton took the circle to start game two, tossing three and two-thirds innings, allowing four hits and striking out two. Niswonger closed out the game with two strikeouts with one and two-thirds innings of work.

UP NEXT

Wittenberg will return home this weekend to host the Terriers of Hiram College for their Tiger Youth Day at Betty Doughman Dillahunt Field. First pitch is set for 1:00 PM.
