Tigers Drop Both Games At Midway Point Of Spring Break

Clermont, FL – The Wittenberg softball team dropped two hard-fought games in their third day of action from The Spring Games over Spring Break. The Tigers started the day falling to Defiance College 6-2 in the first game, before dropping game two 15-6 to Moravian. Wittenberg tallied 19 hits through the two games on the afternoon but was unable to come out with a win.

Game One Breakdown

After a scoreless first inning, Defiance was first to strike with a two-run homer in the bottom half of the second inning. Abby Curnutte cut the lead in half with an RBI double to right-center, scoring pinch runner Elaina Adams. With two more Defiance runs crossing in the bottom of the fourth inning, Olivia Hopkins cut the lead tallied her first homer of the season with a solo shot in the top of the fifth inning.

Mary Britton took the circle to start game one for the Tigers, tossing five innings and allowing nine hits. Katelyn Niswonger closed out the final inning, striking out one with no hits allowed.

Game Two Breakdown

Wittenberg was tasked with a comeback from the early going, as Moravian jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning. The Tigers responded with their first run on an RBI groundout by Missy Lee, bringing home Aubrie Stillings in the bottom of the second inning. Lee would bring around the second Tiger run of the game, jumpstarting a three-run rally and scoring Brooke Dill. Elise Freeland kept her bat hot with an RBI single up the middle, bringing around Lauren Buelow cutting the Moravian lead in half. Brianna Gibson capped off the scoring rally with a single to bring around Hopkins for the third Wittenberg run of the fourth inning. Moravian added another run to their lead in the sixth, but the Tigers continued their comeback by scoring two more in the bottom half of the inning. Hopkins sent a shot back up the middle, scoring Lee for the first run of the sixth. Wittenberg was back within one after Curnutte singled up the middle to bring home Hopkins. The Tiger comeback would fall just short, as Moravian responded with eight runs of their own in the top of the seventh.
