Tigers Fall In Season Opener From The Spring Games

Clermont, FL – The Wittenberg University softball team opened up their 2019 season from the sunshine state on Monday evening, taking on the Alvernia University Golden Wolves in the opener, before facing off against the Roanoke College Maroons in the final game of the day. The Tigers dropped both games to start the trip, falling to Alvernia by a final of 19-2 and dropping the second game to Roanoke 10-2.

Game Breakdown

Alvernia jumped out to a quick lead in game one, scoring nine runs over the first two innings. The Tigers would tally five hits in the game, trying to cut into the Alvernia advantage. Posting two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, starting with a Clara Andersen single up the middle to score Elise Freeland and bring home the first Wittenberg run of the season. Abby Curnutte drove in the second Wittenberg run of the game, bringing home pinch-runner Elaina Adams on a sharply hit ball to the left side of the infield.

The Tigers fell in game two of the day, as Roanoke jumped out to an early 7-0 lead after the first two innings of action. Wittenberg would chip away at the Roanoke advantage, scoring one run in the third and another in the fourth. Freeland brought home the first Tiger run in the third inning, on a single to left, scoring Brooke Dill. An RBI by Missy Lee to the right side of the infield would bring in Andersen to put the final Tiger run on the board.
