GRANVILLE, Ohio—Wittenberg managed to split a twin bill on the road against NCAC foe Denison on Tuesday afternoon. The Tigers dropped the front-end of the double-dip 6-4, before refocusing to take down the Big Red 2-1 in game two. Wittenberg saw senior Abby Haab go the distance in the game two victory, as the Dublin, Ohio native scattered six hits and surrendered one unearned run. Wittenberg moves to 3-1 in NCAC play, while Denison improves to 6-2.
GAME ONE NOTES: The Tigers trailed 6-0 entering the sixth inning, an inning that saw the Tigers get on the board with two critical runs. Olivia Hopkins and Victoria Toetz recorded RBI singles to cut the Big Red lead to 6-2. After starting pitcher Chelsea Zang held the Big Red scoreless in the bottom of the frame, Wittenberg tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh. Missy Lee reached on an error, allowing Lauren Buelow to score, before Abby Curnutte recorded an RBI sac-fly. Wittenberg's comeback fell short, as the Tigers ended up on the wrong end of a 6-4 decision. Rachel Black led the Tigers with two hits, while Curnutte, Hopkins and Toetz recorded one RBI each. Coming off her second career no-hitter, Zang surrendered six earned runs in six innings of work, including five strikeouts and two walks.
GAME TWO NOTES: In a game that featured five scoreless innings for both teams, the Tigers managed to get on the board first in the top of the sixth. Curnutte sent a ball deep into the lef-center gap, scoring Lee on an RBI double. Wittenberg added an insurance run later in the frame, as Alex Gibson laced a single to center field, plating Elaina Adams. Denison managed to score a run in the bottom of the seventh on an infield single, but the Big Red would stop right there, as the Tigers won the rubber match 2-1. Haab stole the show in game two, going the distance for the Tigers while striking out six. Haab didn't allow an earned run in the game, and only issued a free pass to two Big Red batters. Despite only mustering up four hits as a team, the Tigers strung together two when it counted, winning the one-run NCAC contest on the road.
