#24 Wittenberg Wins Two One-Run Contests to Remain Unblemished in NCAC Play

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio—Wittenberg stayed the course and remained unblemished in NCAC play on Sunday afternoon, as the Tigers walked off against OWU in game one, and came back to win in game two. The Tigers 3-2 and 6-5 victories were hard-fought, as Wittenberg improved to 16-4 overall in 2017.

 GAME ONE SCORING BREAKDOWN   

 BOTTOM 3rd

  • In the bottom of the frame, Wittenberg's starting pitcher, Chelsea Zang, sent a shot deep to center field, plating the Tiger's shortstop, Olivia Hopkins.  

 Bottom 7th

  • Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the 7th inning, freshman Wendy Hawk slapped a single to right-field, as Elyssa Labine and Lauren Buelow both scurried home, giving the Tigers the walk-off win.

 GAME TWO SCORING BREAKDOWN

 Bottom 2nd

  • Buelow broke the ice for the Tigers in game two, as the sophomore singled back up the box, plating senior Abby Baker on the play.

 Bottom 3rd

  • Baker followed up for the Tigers with a double to left-field, as Hawk and Missy Lee scored.
  • Cassidy Rowe extended the Tigers lead with a shot to center-field, plating Baker, as the Tigers took a 4-0 lead.

 Bottom 4th

  • After a five-run top of the fourth for OWU, Abby Curnutte tied the game back up for Wittenberg, with an RBI single.

 Bottom 6th

  • With the game still tied at five, Wittenberg scored the eventual game-winning run as Casey Hobbs stole second, drawing a throw from OWU's catcher that sailed into center-field, followed by OWU's center-fielder's throw to third trying to catch Hobbs, as her throw sailed into the dugout, sending her home.

  • Chelsea Zang improved to 11-1 overall in 2017, picking up both wins, as the junior's ERA shrank even more to the tune of 1.14 on Sunday.
  • As a team, the Tigers are currently hitting .282, and are wreaking havoc on the base-paths for opposing teams, stealing 34 bases in 36 attempts.
  • Curnutte currently leads Wittenberg with an average of .407, slugging 24 hits and 14 RBI's through 20 games.
