Tiger's Sweep of Capital Highlighted by Haab's Perfect Game

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio—Wittenberg softball continued their stiff non-conference schedule with OAC foe Capital on Thursday. The Tigers shut down Capital offensively, beating the Crusaders 2-0 and 3-0 in the double-header. Junior pitcher Abby Haab stole the show in game two, tossing her second perfect game in as many seasons for the Tigers, as the Dublin, Ohio native struck out six in seven innings of dominant work for Wittenberg.

GAME ONE SCORING BREAKDOWN

Bottom 1st

  • Wittenberg starting pitcher Chelsea Zang took matters into her own hands in the opening frame, lacing a ball into right field, plating Savannah Taylor and Olivia Hopkins as Wittenberg jumped out to an early 2-0 lead.

  • Hobbs put together a long at-bat against Capital's starter, finally lacing a double over the center fielder's head, scoring Hopkins and Katy Baumgartner on the play.

Bottom 6th

  • Senior outfielder Abby Baker laced a single between the third basemen and shortstop, plating Courtney Lopez on the play.

KEY STATS

  • Zang and Haab combined to allow Capital to only two hits on the day, both serving as the only two Crusader base-runners on the afternoon.
  • Abby Curnutte paced the Tigers with three hits on the day, as Wittenberg produced 11 hits as a team in the two games.
  • As a team, the Tigers wreaked havoc on the base-paths for the Crusader's battery, stealing six bases, while sophomore Missy Lee led the Tigers with two bags.  

HAAB

  • Nearly 11 months to the day, Haab recorded her second perfect game of her Tiger career, as the junior completed the feat against Allegheny on April 24, 2016.
  • Prior to Haab's perfect game last season, the last perfect from a Tiger pitcher came from Rachel Ross on April 30, 2011 against Oberlin as the Tigers won 2-0.
  • Haab struck out six Capital hitters in her unblemished outing, four off the record for a Wittenberg perfect game that the hurler set against Allegheny.
