Tigers Split Double-Header with Otterbein

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio—Wittenberg split their home opener against the Cardinals of Otterbein on Tuesday afternoon. The Tigers managed to win game one with a dramatic walk-off finish that featured a two-strike two RBI double, before falling 3-0 in game number two.

GAME ONE SCORING BREAKDOWN

TOP 5th

  • Otterbein dribbled a grounder back to the Tigers starting pitcher, Chelsea Zang, as the spin on the ball made for a tough play, as the Cardinals runner scored from third, taking a 1-0 lead.

BOTTOM 7th

  • After intentionally walking Katy Baumgartner to load the bases, pinch hitter Briana Gibson came up big for the Tigers, slapping a two-strike double down the third base line, plating Casey Hobbs and Courtney Lopez.
  • The game winning run came with controversy, as the throw beat Hobbs to the plate, but the tag from Otterbein's catcher was high, as Gibson's hit proved to enough for the Tigers.

TOP 5TH

  • Otterbein took a 2-0 lead as a ball hit by the Cardinals three-hole hitter rolled all the way to the left field wall, plating two runs.

TOP 6th

  • The six-hole hitter for the Cardinals extended her team's lead by one with a solo-shot over the right-center wall, giving Otterbein a 3-0 lead.

KEY STATS

  • Wittenberg posted nine hits on the afternoon, as Lauren Buelow led the Tigers with two.
  • In game one, Zang was dominant, surrendering two hits in seven innings of work, while surrendering one unearned-run.
  • Despite committing one error in 14 innings of play, the Tigers defense was sharp, twisting two double-plays in game one.
  • Three of the Tigers nine hits on the day went for extra-bases, as Buelow, Hobbs and Gibson all recorded doubles.
