Tigers Fend Off Mount Union and Wheaton in Spring Break Double-Dip
LEESBURG, Florida—Tiger softball was back in action in sunny Florida on Tuesday morning, as the Tigers managed to defeat Mount Union, their third consecutive OAC opponent, 6-1. Making quick work of the Purple Raiders, the Tigers turned around and defeated the Thunder of Wheaton College, 5-2. Chelsea Zang was the winner in game one for Wittenberg, while her counterpart Abby Haab took care of business for the Tigers in game two. The Tigers hot 4-0 start comes thanks to the Tigers pitching staff, as opponents are currently hitting .146 against Haab and Zang.

MOUNT UNION SCORING BREAKDOWN

Top 5th

  • Wittenberg trailed 1-0 until the fifth inning, as Katy Baumgartner hit a shot up the middle that scored Courtney Lopez, as Baumgartner was able to move up to second on the cutoff throw.
  • The nail in Mount Union's coffin came off of the bat of Casey Hobbs, as the senior second baseman sent a towering three-run shot over the left field fence to extend the Tigers lead to 4-1.

Top 7th

  • Freshman shortstop Olivia Hopkins reached first base on an error by the Purple Raiders right fielder, as Hobbs and Savannah Taylor crossed the plate to make the game 6-1.

WHEATON SCORING BREAKDOWN

Bottom 1st

  • Abby Curnutte broke the ice for the Tigers in game two, singling home Baumgartner to take an early 1-0 lead.

Bottom 4th

  • Trailing 2-1 in the middle innings, Curnutte sent a 1-0 offering over the left-field fence for a game-tying solo-shot.

Bottom 5th

  • Curnutte put the finishing touches on her magnificent day at the plate, putting together a long at bat that resulted in a line-drive back up the box, plating Hopkins and Lauren Buelow, as the Tigers lead grew to 4-2.

Bottom 6th

  • Buelow came up big for the Tigers in the bottom of the sixth, tacking on an insurance run as the sophomore singled through the left side of the Thunder defense, plating fellow sophomore Missy Lee.
KEY STATS
  • Curnutte's big offensive day included four hits, a home-run, and four RBI's.
  • Zang improved to 2-0 on the young season with a complete game, nine strikeout performance against the Purple Raiders in game one.
  • Haab also joined Zang at 2-0, as the junior hurler also went for a complete game, scattering three hits and totaling five strikeouts against Wheaton.
  • Wittenberg's offense totaled seven hits in each contest on Tuesday, stranding four runners against Mount Union, and six against Wheaton.
  • On the day, the Tigers walked three times at the plate and struck out nine times as a team.
