Tigers Down JCU in Season Opener While Matthews Records 100th Victory as Head Coach

LEESBURG, Florida—Wittenberg softball picked up their first win of the 2017 season with a 6-3 victory over OAC foe John Carroll on Monday afternoon. Despite committing three errors in the contest, Wittenberg slugged nine hits and benefited from a four-run fourth inning to dispose of JCU. The win for the Tigers is Coach Laura Matthews' 100th win as head coach of Wittenberg.

 KEY MOMENTS
  • Tied at 2-2, Wittenberg broke the tie as Chelsea Zang took matters into her own hands, flipping a single into left field scoring Casey Hobbs. 
  • Capping off the four run bottom of the third, Charlee Clark recorded an RBI on a base hit to extend the Tigers lead to 6-2.

Bottom 1st

  • Wittenberg drew first blood on Monday, as Abby Baker laced a single to left field and moved up to second on an errant relay throw, scoring Hobbs.

Bottom 2nd

  • Clark recorded her first of two hits on Monday, scoring Abby Curnutte on the play. 

Bottom 3rd

  • Tied at 2-2, Wittenberg broke the tie as Chelsea Zang took matters into her own hands, flipping a single into left field that scored Casey Hobbs.
  • On a wild pitch, Zang crossed home as Olivia Hopkins moved up to third on the error, and Curnutte to second. 
  • Missy Lee kept the Tigers going in the big inning, lacing a single to left, scoring Hopkins on the play.
