Tiger Softball Takes Two from Gators as Haab Tosses Perfect Game

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio—Wittenberg softball swept Allegheny in a double-header Sunday in Springfield, 10-5 and 5-0. Despite moving to a sparkling 25-6-1 in 2016, the story of the day was sophomore hurler Abby Haab (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome). The righty dominated the Gators in game two, tossing a seven inning perfect game for the Tigers, something that has not happened since 2011. The perfect game featured 10 strikeouts from Haab, as the Tiger pitcher was able to sit all 21 batters down in order on Sunday. Haab just need 93 pitches to complete the feat, as 73 of which were strikes. The Tigers 25-6-1 record overall also features a stellar 9-3 NCAC record after the sweep.

 

GAME ONE NOTES

  • Wittenberg managed to put up a crooked number on the scoreboard in game one, as six Tigers crossed home in the bottom of the third, as Wittenberg led 8-3.  
  • The crushing blow in the third inning came off of the bat from Kaela Hughes (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Watterson), as the senior crushed a ball in the gap for a two-RBI double, plating Abby Baker (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) and Casey Hobbs (Fairborn, Ohio/Carroll) who previously singled in the inning.
  • Starting pitcher Chelsea Zang (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) helped her own cause in the bottom of the fifth, crushing a deep home run to centerfield, putting the Tigers up 9-3.
  • Wittenberg would tack on there tenth run of the game in the bottom of the sixth after a Baker single to center field scored Hobbs.

GAME TWO NOTES

  • The Tigers managed to record runs in the first, third, fourth, and sixth innings in game two, as Katy Baumgartner (Fishers, Indiana/Cathedral) recorded RBI's in the first and third inning.
  • Wittenberg managed to get to five runs in game two after a Lauren Buelow (Hilliard, Ohio/Darby) single plated both Shannon Lance (Loveland, Ohio/Kings) and Charlee Clark (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson).

PERFECT GAME

  • The last perfect game from a Tiger pitcher came from Rachel Ross on April 30, 2011 against Oberlin as the Tigers won 2-0.
  • The most recent no-hitter to date for the Tiger's before Haab's perfecto came from Zang, as the freshman hurler at the time completed the feat against Wooster on April 1, 2015.
  • Haab's ten strikeouts is the most in a Tiger no-hitter to date.

FROM THE BENCH

  • "Abby was absolutely incredible today. She was locked in from start to finish and did a tremendous job of hitting her spots and competing on the mound. We are so proud of her," said Coach Matthews.
