Wittenberg Splits Double-Header in Home Opener to Thomas More

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio—The Wittenberg Tigers continued their impressive start to the 2016 with a double-header home opener against Thomas More Sunday afternoon. Wittenberg dropped the first game 9-4 for the team's first loss of the season, but the team was able to bounce back in the second game with a 3-2 walk-off victory. Wittenberg improves to 12-1-1 on the season, while Chelsea Zang (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) improves to 7-0 on the mound with a 1.21 ERA.

 

GAME ONE NOTES

  • Wittenberg jumped out to a 2-0 lead behind two RBI's from Shannon Lance (Loveland, Ohio/Kings), one in the second and one in the fourth, both plating Lauren Buelow (Hilliard, Ohio/Darby).
  • The fifth and sixth innings for Thomas Moore proved to be too much for the Tigers, as the visitors erupted for nine runs late.
  • Buelow and Kaela Hughes (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Watterson) each paced the Tigers with three hits apiece, while Lance's two RBI's led Wittenberg.

GAME TWO NOTES

  • Wittenberg got on the board in the third inning, as Buelow scored her third run of the day on a Loren Combs (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) single to tie things up 1-1.
  • Thomas More was able to take the lead in the top of the 7th inning, but it was the Tigers who would score last, as a Hughes single led to two RBI's on a throwing error by Thomas More in the bottom of the 7th inning, allowing the Tigers to win the game in walk-off fashion.

KEY STATS

  • Zang held Thomas More to only two hits in Sunday's victory, while the Tigers offense was efficient in the win, leaving only two runners on base in the game.
  • Wittenberg managed to steal six bases on the day in seven opportunities, as Combs led the Tigers with two.
  • Zang's dominant day included six more strikeouts, running her season total up to 32 as opponents continue to struggle against her, batting a minute .199.

UP NEXT

  • The Tigers return to action March 22 as they travel up interstate 70 to Capital University for a double-head set to start at 3:00PM.
