Tiger Offense Takes Over In Sweep At Oberlin

OBERLIN, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers overwhelmed host Oberlin with a tremendous offensive display to claim both ends of a doubleheader by scores of 9-3 and 14-6.

Wittenberg improved to 14-12 overall and 7-3 in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) with the sweep. The Tigers had split its first three league road doubleheaders at Wooster, Allegheny and Kenyon.

Oberlin fell to 2-19-1 overall and 1-7 in the NCAC.

The opener started with an Oberlin run in the bottom of the first inning, but Wittenberg took control with nine runs over the next five innings before the Yeowomen finally got back on the board with two runs in the sixth. The Tigers pounded out 17 hits in the game as six different players finished with multi-hit games.

Leading the way was junior Shannon Lance (Loveland, Ohio/Kings), who collected four hits in five at-bats and three runs batted in. Freshman Charlee Clark (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) went 3-for-5, and sophomore Abby Baker (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield), junior Kaela Hughes (Columbus, Ohio/Watterson), freshman Chelsea Zang (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) and freshman Sam Bausch (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) each finished with two hits. Baker and Zang each drove in two runs.

Zang, who homered in the game, picked up the pitching victory with seven strong innings. She allowed three runs (one earned) on five hits.

Game 2 started in a similar fashion, only this time the Yeowomen jumped on top with four first-inning runs. Wittenberg responded, however, with an eight-spot in the second inning to take control. By game's end, the Tigers had pushed 14 runs across the plate on the strength of 13 hits, including home runs from sophomore Casey Hobbs (Fairborn, Ohio/Carroll) and Hughes.

Hobbs and Baker led with three hits each, while Lance, Zang and Hughes added two hits apiece. Hobbs and Hughes each drove in three runs and Baker collected a pair of RBIs.

Freshman Abby Haab (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) tossed a complete game to gain the victory. She allowed six runs (four earned) on 10 hits.
