Chelsea Zang Tosses No-Hitter As Tigers Earn Split At Wooster

WOOSTER, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers got a pitching performance for the history books, but Wooster rallied to earn a doubleheader split in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) lid-lifter for both teams.

Freshman righthander Chelsea Zang (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) was dominant in Game 1, recording the program's third no-hitter since 2011. She recorded seven hearly perfect innings, allowing no hits or walks. Wooster did manage three base-runners, but all three reached by virtue of a Wittenberg error.

Zang helped herself with the bat as well, collecting three hits in four plate appearances and driving in one of the Tigers' three runs in the seventh inning. Sophomore Abby Baker (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) and junior Kaela Hughes (Columbus, Ohio/Watterson) also drove in runs in the decisive rally.

Zang improved to 6-2 on the season, and she was so efficient in the opener that she pitched five innings in the nightcap as well. Wooster finally caught up to her in the fifth inning, putting four runs on the board to claim a 6-4 lead. Zang was credited with five innings pitched, as she allowed six runs (five earned) on seven hits.

Wittenberg rallied to tie the score in the top of the seventh as Hughes doubled and scored on a double by sophomore Casey Hobbs (Fairborn, Ohio/Carroll). Baker then drove Hobbs in with an RBI single.

Wooster had the answer with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, however, as the Scots parlayed an infield single, a fielder's choice and a ground ball single through the left side into the winning run.

Junior Shannon Lance (Maineville, Ohio/Kings), Hobbs and Baker each finished with two hits in the game, with Baker and Zang each driving in a pair. Hobbs scored twice.

The Tigers, now 8-10 on the season and 1-1 in the NCAC, are scheduled to return to action at home for a pair of doubleheaders over Easter weekend. Wittenberg will host Anderson on Friday, April 3, and league rival Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday, April 4.
