CLERMONT, Fla. – The Wittenberg softball team picked up a split in the opening day of their 2015 season, taking a 2-0 victory from Wheaton (Ill.) before falling 7-2 to Lake Forest College.

In the win, Wittenberg scored two in the fifth and that was all it took as freshman pitcher Chelsea Zang (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) went seven innings and allowed just four hits and one walk against three strikeouts in her shutout collegiate debut in the circle.

Junior Loren Combs (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) was 2-for-4 with a triple that knocked in the winning run as freshman Sam Bausch (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) crossed the plate. Junior Shannon Lance (Loveland, Ohio/Kings) scored Combs with an RBI groundout in the next at-bat. Bausch finished 1-for-3 in her first collegiate game as the Tigers compiled six hits for the game.

Lake Forest pitcher Jenny McTague had the magic in the Tigers' second game, holding Wittenberg to just one hit. Even the one hit was costly to McTague's ERA, however, as it was a bases-clearing double by freshman Charlee Clark (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) immediately following walks drawn by junior Kaela Hughes (Columbus, Ohio/Watterson) and Bausch.

Freshman Abby Haab (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) absorbed the loss in the circle despite tossing five strikeouts.

The Tigers continue Spring Break action with a 9 a.m. game versus Berry and an 11 a.m. contest with Simmons tomorrow, Tuesday, March 10, at Foundation Academy in Clermont, Fla.
