Tigers Split A Pair With John Carroll To Wrap Up Homestand

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers put the wraps on an unexpected homestand with a split against John Carroll. Wittenberg captured the opener by a 7-6 count before the Blue Streaks rallied for a 7-4 win in the nightcap.

The split capped a successful homestand for the Tigers, who swept a pair from Baldwin-Wallace on Saturday. Wittenberg is 8-6 overall with home games slated for Wednesday against Transylvania and Thursday against Urbana.

In the opener, the Tigers held a 5-1 lead through four innings, thanks in large part to a three-run double by junior Sarah Fetters (Maumee, Ohio/Maumee). However, John Carroll came right back with four runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to take a one-run lead.

That set the stage for a dramatic rally as the Tigers scored twice in bottom of the seventh. A pair of walks set the stage for a clutch two-run double from senior Lucy Huelsman (Wellington, Ohio/Wellington), which scored freshman Cameron Catalfu (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) and junior pinch-runner Erin Meredith (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville).

The nightcap went John Carroll's way, despite another good offensive game from Fetters, who finished 3-for-4 with two runs batted in to key an 11-hit attack. Junior Amy Myser (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and sophomore Julie Ziegler (Sandusky, Ohio/Perkins) added two-hit games, but John Carroll struck for at least one run in five of the seven innings against Wittenberg starter Grace Wigton (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Christian), who went the distance and allowed 11 hits and seven runs, five of them earned.
