Men's Volleyball earns sweep at Mount St. Joseph

CINCINNATI — The Wittenberg men's volleyball team defeated Mount St. Joseph on Friday night in straight sets, winning 25-17, 25-21, 25-20.

The Basics

  • Records: Wittenberg (8-7 overall), Mount St. Joseph (4-8 overall)
  • Venue: Harrington Center - Cincinnati, Ohio

Stat Leaders

  • Senior Tom Supan (Medina, Ohio/Medina) led the Tigers in kills with 11, and sophomore Eli Halverson (Hamilton, Ohio/Badin) was right behind with nine of his own.
  • Senior Andrew Diaz de Padilla (Nipmo, Calif./Central Coast New Tech) once again led the team in assists with 22, and sophomore Sam Richardson (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) finished the match with 15 assists.
  • With three solo blocks and three block assists, sophomore Moose Harper (Columbus, Ohio/Western Reserve Academy) led the team in both of those categories.
  • Supan also led the team in digs with 14, which was tops for both teams.
  • Tanner Smart led Mount St. Joseph in kills with four, and Ben Carmosino led in assists with 17. 

The Game

  • Wittenberg started the first set on a 4-0 run, and from that point on, never led by any fewer than four points for the reaminder of the set en route to a 25-17 win. 
  • Each team went back and forth in the second set, and the Tigers were once down 12-10. They came back and tied the score at 13 and took a 14-13 edge and kept the lead for the remainder of the set and finished at 25-21 for a two-set lead.
  • The final set was similar to the first. The score was tied at 4-all, but Wittenberg took a 5-4 lead and kept a lead until the set ended at 25-20 for the Tigers' third win of the season that came in straight sets.

  • Wittenberg is now 6-7 all-time against Mount St. Joseph.
  • Third-year head coach Nathan Matthews is now 38-34 all-time at Wittenberg.
  • Diaz de Padilla has 401 assists this season and ranks third in program history with 1,011 career assists. His 610 assists from last season rank seventh in program history for a single season.
  • Yurk has 187 kills this season and ranks ninth in program history with 380 career kills. He is 17 kills shy of breaking into the program's all-time top 10 list for kills in a season.
  • Supan has 339 career kills, which is 29 shy of 10th all-time at Wittenberg. His 241 career digs rank ninth in program history in that category.
