Tigers Drop Hard Fought Battle To MSJ

Springfield, Ohio – The Wittenberg men's volleyball team dropped a hard-fought non-conference contest to the Lions of Mount St. Joseph, 3-1 (21-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-21). The Tigers took the first set of the match, battling the Lions back and forth to the final points of the second and fourth set to try and force a fifth set. Ashton Sellers led the Wittenberg attack with 15 kills on 38 total attack attempts, adding six digs and two blocks on the night. The Tigers have now split their series meeting with MSJ, as each team has picked up a win on the other's home court. Wittenberg moves to 8-6 on the season, remaining at 1-1 in AMCC action.

Match Breakdown

Wittenberg opened the match, logging 12 kills in the first set on 41 total attack attempts, recording a .098 hitting percentage. The Tigers battled it out in the second set, as the Red and White gained a 12-9 advantage through the early going. Wittenberg tallied 11 kills on 41 attack attempts. Wittenberg held the Lions to swinging -.023 in the second set, forcing 10 MSJ errors on 43 attack attempts with just nine kills. MSJ took the third set in 25-18, forcing a must-win fourth set situation by the Tigers. The Lions were able to tally 12 kills to the Tigers in the fourth and final set, holding Wittenberg to a .059 hitting percentage to close out the match.

Who Stood Out

Deion Woodson tallied eight kills, adding seven digs and five blocks to his total. Isaiah Brock added six kills with eight blocks and a dig on the evening. Ross Russell tallied 29 of the 38 Tiger assists on the night, coming up with eight digs and the lone ace of the night for the Red and White.

Wittenberg will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 23 travelling to Penn. St. – Altoona for three matches in two days. The Tigers will take on Penn. St.-Behrend in their first match of the weekend on Saturday at 1:00 PM in an AMCC contest, before matching up against Thiel at 3:30 PM in their second conference match of the day.
