Tigers Open Spring Break With Big Win Over Alfred

TAMPA, Fla. - The Wittenberg Tigers got their 2016 Spring Break off to a strong start with a pair of wins over Alfred. The Tiger men claimed the win by a 7-2 decision, while the Tigers took the women's competition by a 9-0 whitewashing.

Wittenberg heads into an off day in the Sunshine State with records of 3-4 on the men's side and 2-5 on the women's. The Tigers have five more matches on the schedule before returning to campus.

The match started for the men with a close doubles competition. Wittenberg pulled out two of the three matches as freshman Matt Arroyo (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) teamed with junior Akbar Tiwana (Lahore, Pakistan/Aitchison) to win 8-4 at No. 2 and junior Sean Munson (Chicago, Ill./Roycemore) teamed with freshman Kieren Thomas (Cincinnati, Ohio/Wyoming) to win 9-7 at No. 3.

In singles, the Tigers rolled to five straight sets victories, starting with Arroyo's double-bagel at No. 2. Freshman Timmy McNulty (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral), Tiwana, senior Dennis Gleason (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles) and freshman Alex Sarihan (New Carlisle, Ohio/Tecumseh) picked up wins at Nos. 3 through 6.

The women's match included a pair of wins by walkover for Wittenberg. In doubles, the tandem of freshmen Sarah Frisch (Crescent Springs, Ky./Notre Dame) and Alyson Dust (San Bernardino, Calif./Cajon) won 8-6 at No. 1 and the tandem of freshmen Nora Jacobson (Easton, Md./Easton) and Haley Jackson (Hilliard, Ohio/Bradley) won 8-4 at No. 2.

In singles, Wittenberg did not drop a set while winning the top five courts. Freshman Carli Milano (Beavercreek, Ohio/Carroll), freshman Alivia Livesay (Tryon, NC/Polk County), Frisch, Dust and senior Jessica Harting (Lucasville, Ohio/Portsmouth Notre Dame) swept the matches while losing a combined 13 games.
