Tigers Show Strong in Season Opener

ALBION, Michigan- Wittenberg men's tennis traveled to Albion University over the weekend, where the Tigers were met with a tough match, but stood tall and rose to the occassion.

Wittenberg dropped the day 5-4, but had a lot to celebrate in the season-opener. The Tiger's day was highlighted by wins from freshman Timmy McNulty (Indianapolis, Indiana/Cathedral) in number four singles and number two doubles with partner Luke Minard (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood).

Wittenberg was also led by Akbar Tiwana (Lahore, Pakistan / Aitchison) and his win out of the number five singles posistion, as well as another win from the number three doubles team of Matt Arroyo (Cinicinnati, Ohio/Princeton) and Sean Munson (Chicago, Illinois/Roycemore).

FROM THE COACH

  • "As I simultaneously watched our No 1 and 2 doubles begin their matches, I found myself smiling with delight at how focused, enthusiastic, positive, and respectful our men were competing. You wouldn't have known by watching that we were missing 2 athletes due to minor injuries, that 4 of the 6 varsity athletes were freshmen, or frankly that we were even the visiting team! We competed from the opening doubles point to Tiwana's final singles point like this was our day. Although we lost heart-wrenching matches at 3 and 6 singles, McNulty's tenacity to fight and win despite leg cramps, Minard's battle to fend off somewhere around 7 match points, and our team's unwaivering optimism made for a great spring opener," said Coach Rohner.
