Tigers Open Spring Break Trip With Pair Of Big Wins

HILTON HEAD, SC — The Wittenberg Tigers kicked off their annual Spring Break trip to Hilton Head, SC, with a pair of decisive victories, beating Defiance 8-1 and Grand Rapids Community College 7-2.

The wins snapped a two-match slide for the Tigers, who posted a 3-0 dual match record during the fall season. Heading into a day off from competition, Wittenberg stands at 5-2 on the season.

In the first match of the day, the Tigers swept the doubles courts to get off to a strong start against Defiance. Powered by a three-set win by senior Bobby Fisher (Gahanna, Ohio/Lincoln), Wittenberg then won five of the six singles matches to cruise to the victory.

Double-winners in the match were freshmen Sam Wilke (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) at No. 4 singles and No. 2 doubles and Tyler Strong (Louisville, Ky./DuPont Manual) at No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles. Also of note, sophomore Sergio Fishkin (Minsk, Belarus) were perfect at No. 3 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 victory.

The Tigers returned to the courts a few hours later and continued to play well, this time defeating Grand Rapids Community College. Double-winners were Fisher at No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles, Strong at No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles, Wilke at No. 4 singles and No. 3 doubles and Fishkin at No. 3 singles and No. 3 doubles.
