Springfield, Ohio— Wittenberg University's swimming and diving teams not only made waves in the pool during the 2009-10 school year, the Tigers recently earned accolades from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) for outstanding individual and team academic performances.
The Tiger women posted a 3.19 team grade point average (GPA) to earn a 2009-10 CSCAA Team Scholar All-Academic Award. The award honors teams that display excellence in the classroom by maintaining at least a 3.0 cumulative team GPA on a 4.0 scale.
Individually, Adeline Brym, class of 2010 from Mansfield, Ohio, and Neil Anderson, class of 2010 from Lakewood, Ohio, were both named honorable mention Scholar All-Americans for 2009-10. Honorable mention status is conferred to student-athletes who earn provisional (B Cut) qualifying times for the NCAA Division III Championship meet or compete in the event without earning All-America honors while maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale.
Brym finished 43rd in the 50 freestyle, 27th in the 100 backstroke and 27th in the 200 backstroke at the 2010 NCAA Division III Championships, a year after earning All-America honors with an eighth-place finish in the 200 backstroke. She reached the national meet even after missing the first half of the 2009-10 season to study at the Duke Marine Science Laboratory in Beaufort, N.C.
For her career, Brym earned nine All-North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) designations. She holds four individual school records and is a member of five record-setting relay teams.
Anderson earned NCAA Division III B cuts in each of his four seasons in the Red & White, but he missed out on the national meet by the slimmest of margins each time. In addition to five All-NCAC honors in his career, including three in the 2010 meet, Anderson is the school record-holder in the 500 freestyle and was a member of three record-setting relays in his career.
"Student-athletes must budget their time and organize themselves well to meet the challenges of both schoolwork and collegiate athletics," said Wittenberg Head Coach Natalie Koukis, a two-time NCAC Coach of the Year honoree. "I'm very proud of the fact that the student-athletes in this program can reach a high level of achievement in both areas."
The Tigers open the 2010-11 season on Oct. 23 at the annual NCAC Relays, hosted by Kenyon College. The dual meet portion of the schedule begins at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, when the Ohio Wesleyan Battling Bishops visit Wittenberg, followed by a trip to arch-rival Wooster at 1 p.m. the next day.
