The Wittenberg men's soccer team netted a goal in each half, but it wasn't enough as visiting Wabash escaped Springfield with a 3-2 win over the Tigers on Tuesday night. Wittenberg now sits at 1-3-0 on the year in league play and 6-7 overall following the one-goal setback.

How The Tigers Scored

After a hard-fought defensive battle over the first 30 minutes of action, the Tigers lit up the scoreboard first in the 31st minute as senior Alberto Zaragoza netted his league-leading 11th goal of the season off a loose ball in front of the net. However, the Little Giants responded with a pair of goals in the final 15 minutes of the first half from Timothy Herring to take a 2-1 lead into intermission.

Herring completed a natural hattrick early in the second half to give the Little Giants the 3-1 lead in the 53rd minute, and after nearly 20 minutes of scoreless action, the Tigers pulled within one on a goal from freshman Will Stephens. Zaragoza was credited with the assist on Stephens' goal. Despite several scoring opportunities in the final minutes of the game, the Tigers ultimately fell one goal short of the Little Giants in the conference match.

By The Numbers

The Tigers did hold slight advantages in both shots, 14-11, and corner kick opportunities, 3-1, but the Little Giants made the best of their scoring opportunities with three goals on just five shots on goal. Senior Jack Snider finished the match with two saves in the Wittenberg net.

Up Next

The Tigers will now settle in for a three-match road swing against conference opponents, starting with a 1:00 p.m. match at Denison this Saturday (10/13) in Granville, Ohio.
