Wittenberg Men's Soccer Pushes Past Olivet 2-1

Springfield, Ohio – As the five-game opening homestand came to an end this past Sunday when the Wittenberg men's soccer team welcomed in the Olivet Comets. The Tigers fizzled out any Comets hope of picking up a road win, as Wittenberg would earn their third consecutive home win with their 2-1 triumph over Olivet.

How the Tigers Scored

Senior striker Alberto Zaragoza broke through the Olivet defense in the 11th minute. Zaragoza was able to beat the keeper for his fifth goal of the season, as well as his fourth in three games. A Wittenberg counter-attack led to an Eli Esterline goal from Austin Lewis just before the 20th minute giving the Tigers a 2-0 advantage.  The Tigers made their lead last for over 40 minutes, including through the intermission. Olivet was able to put their only goal in the net in the 62nd minute of action.

From The Bench

"This was an important win for us. It's been a long time since the program has had a record above .500. Three consecutive wins marked by solid defending and opportunistic offense. We're getting good senior leadership which has been important given the number of young guys we're playing. Still, it's a process. We have plenty of work to do and look forward to the next challenge, our first road trip of the season," head coach Dwight Burgess.

Up Next

Wittenberg will take their first road trip of the season when they travel to Mount St. Joseph on Wednesday, Sept. 12 for a 7:30 PM kickoff.
