Tigers Drop Kiwanis Classic Finale To Wilmington

WILMINGTON, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers took twice as many shots as the Wilmington Quakers, but the host team of the Kiwanis Classic scored twice as many goals in a 2-1 victory.

The loss dropped Wittenberg to 1-3-2 on the season, while Wilmington won for the second time against four losses. The Tigers continue their busy early season nonconference schedule with three games over the next seven days, starting with a road trip to Mount St. Joseph on Wednesday, Sept. 16.

Wilmington opened the scoring with a goal in the 30th minute, but sophomore Nick Foley (Fishers, Ind./Cathedral) evened the score at the 41:17 mark. Over the final 45 minutes, the Tigers fired eight shots at the Wilmington goal without success, while the Quakers scored the game-winner in the 62nd minute.

Wittenberg led the shot count by a 16-8 margin, although the Quakers finished with a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks. Freshman Nick Gutlove (Canton, Ohio/IMG Academy (Fla.)) led with four shots, while sophomore Josh McErlean (Columbus, Ohio/Westerville South) and freshman Zach Antisdel (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) finished with three shots apiece.

Freshman Austin Lewis (New Carlisle, Ohio/Tecumseh), sophomore Cameron Ferguson (Westerville, Ohio/South) and sophomore Alberto Gonzalez (New Carlisle, Ohio/Tecumseh) were named to the all-tournament team.
