WILMINGTON, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers put one ball in the back of the net in each half and let its defense do the rest in a 2-0 victory on opening night of the Wilmington Kiwanis Classic.

The win was Wittenberg's second in a row and improved the Tigers to 4-2-1 overall. The competition continues Saturday as the Tigers will square off with former North Coast Athletic Conference rival Earlham at 5 p.m.

Wittenberg opened the scoring with a goal by freshman Alexandre Veuthey (Geneva, Switzerland) in the 31st minute. Veuthey's first collegiate score was assisted by senior Mitch Rudibaugh (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman).

With Wittenberg's defense well on its way to recording its third shutout of the 2014 season, senior Brian Boutin (Mount Vernon, Ohio/Mount Vernon) put the game out of reach with an unassisted goal in the 71st minute.

Wittenberg outshot Defiance, which fell to 1-5-1 on the season, by a 16-9 margin, including a dominating 9-2 edge over the opening 45 minutes. Sophomore Josh Marks (Bushey, England/Watford Grammar School for Boys) accounted for five of the Tigers' shots.

At the other end of the pitch, senior goalkeeper James Van Artsdalen (Riverwoods, Ill./Deerfield) came up with five saves, all in the second half.
