Wittenberg Soccer Student-Athletes Collect Statewide Honors

Springfield, Ohio – The Ohio Collegiate Soccer Association has handed out its 2014 All-Ohio and Academic All-Ohio awards, and the Wittenberg Tigers are well represented, with a total of five student-athletes earning recognition. 

Wittenberg’s women were represented on the 2014 All-Ohio awards list by senior midfielder Tobie Weston (Worthington, Ohio/Worthington Christian), who garnered first-team honors. In addition, sophomore defender Michelle Brunswick (Middletown, Ohio/Madison) was selected first-team Academic All-Ohio and junior forward Kate Burns (Granger, Ind./Penn) earned second -team Academic All-Ohio after claiming a spot on the third team following the 2013 season. 

On the men’s side, sophomore forward Josh Marks (Bushey, England/Watford Grammar School for Boys) was named second-team Academic All-Ohio and junior defender Zack Moore (Kettering, Ohio/Alter) claimed third-team Academic All-Ohio. 

To earn Academic All-Ohio honors, student-athletes must be nominated by their coach after maintaining at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average through a minimum of two semesters. 

The All-Ohio nod for Weston was the second of her career after she earned second-team honors in 2013. Weston also earned honorable mention All-North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) in 2011 and 2012 and first-team All-NCAC in 2013 and 2014, in addition to a first-team All-Great Lakes Region award in 2014. 

Weston was a four-year starter for the Tigers, and she finished her collegiate career with nine goals and 10 assists in 75 games. Three of her goals were game-winners, including a crucial penalty kick in a 4-1 win over Wooster on Oct. 25 that earned the Tigers a spot in the 2014 NCAC Tournament. 

Brunswick started 15 games in 2014, scoring three goals and contributing one assist to the offensive attack while playing several positions in the defensive backfield and the midfield. Also a standout for the Tiger women’s basketball team, Brunswick played a key role in helping the Tiger defense limit opponents on the pitch to 1.4 goals per game. 

Burns led the Tigers with eight goals and 20 total points in 2014, running her career totals to 14 goals, five assists and 33 total points. Three of her goals in 2014 were game-winners. Her career goal total ranks 14th in Wittenberg history. Following the season, Burns earned her first All-NCAC award as she picked up a spot on the second team. 

Marks battled through early season injuries to contribute three assists in 14 games, including eight starting assignments, in the 2014 season. After scoring two goals and dishing out two assists in his inaugural collegiate season, Marks was named honorable mention All-NCAC. 

Moore completed his third year as a starter for the Tigers in 2014, and he continued to show his great versatility. Listed as a defender on the roster, Moore saw action at both ends of the pitch during his junior season, and he finished with two goals and one assist while playing all 18 games, including 17 starts. 

In 2014, the Tiger women posted records of 8-8-1 overall and 4-4-0 in the NCAC. Wittenberg finished fourth in the final NCAC standings and advanced to the league tournament before losing 2-0 to eventual champion Kenyon in the semifinal round. The Tiger men finished 7-10-1 overall and 2-7-0 in the league.
