SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers opened the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) portion of the 2013 schedule with a rally for a 1-1 tie with visiting Oberlin.
Wittenberg is now 4-5-1 overall and 0-0-1 in the NCAC, while Oberlin checks in at 6-1-2 overall and 0-0-1 in the conference.
A much-needed point in the conference standings was anything but a sure thing in the waning moments for the Tigers before junior Reed Glosser (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills) crossed a free kick into the penalty area at the 88:16 mark. Junior Joe Poff (Vandalia, Ohio/Butler) headed the ball into the goal to stun Oberlin, which had held a tenuous one-goal lead for more than 54 minutes after John Ingham scored at the 34:12 mark.
Overall in the game, Oberlin held a narrow 25-19 advantage in shots and a 3-2 edge in corner kick opportunities. Senior Kevin Bond (Bexley, Ohio/Bexley) led Wittenberg with four attempts on goal, while Glosser and freshman Josh Marks (Hertfordshire, England/Watford Grammar School for Boys) added three each.
At the other end of the field, junior James Van Artsdalen (Riverwoods, Ill./Deerfield) was credited with a career-high 13 saves in the game.
