MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Wittenberg Tigers were a tantalizing 31 seconds away from earning an upset victory over Allegheny in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) opener for both teams. It wasn't to be, however, as the Gators leveled the match with a late strike and two overtimes couldn't settle it as Wittenberg and Allegheny settled for a 2-2 tie.

The tie moved Wittenberg to 4-3-2 overall, while Allegheny is now 6-1-1. Both teams earned one point toward the NCAC standings.

The Gators got on the board first with an unassisted goal from David DelGreco in the 12th minute. But the Tigers bounced back in the second half, tying the game on a penalty kick by senior Daniel Broidy (Bexley, Ohio/Bexley) in the 57th minute and then taking what turned out to be a short-lived lead on another Broidy penalty kick in the 86th minute.

The first freebie was earned by junior Brian Boutin (Mount Vernon, Ohio/Mount Vernon) and the second came after senior Marshall Rowland (Pewee Valley, Ky./South Oldham) was fouled in the penalty area.

The Gators rallied at the 89:29 mark, however, knotting things at two on DelGreco's second goal of the afternoon.

Allegheny led the shots count by a 21-15 margin and the Gators held a commanding 8-2 advantage in corner kick opportunities. Wittenberg sophomore goalkeeper Jeff Mengerink (Delaware, Ohio/Hayes) recorded six saves in the game, compared to eight for his Allegheny counterpart.

Wittenberg steps back out of conference play on Wednesday, Sept. 26, for a 7 p.m. kick-off against visiting Earlham before heading to Oberlin for a 7 p.m. first kick on Saturday, Sept. 29.
