Tigers Pull Out Late Win Over Otterbein

Declan McBride

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — For the first time since the end of the 2008 season, the Wittenberg Tigers have pushed two games above .500 and won three games in a row after a 1-0 decision over visiting Otterbein in the final game of the 2011 Wittenberg Invitational.

The win came a day after Wittenberg beat Mount Union 2-1, and it moved the Tigers to 3-1 on the young season. Otterbein, which tied Kenyon 1-1 on the opening day of the competition, dropped to 1-2-1.

The two teams battled through nearly 80 minutes before senior Declan McBride (Surrey, England/Tasis) broke through with a header off a feed from sophomore Zach White (Lima, Ohio/Temple Christian). Senior goalkeeper Michael Lambeck (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman) and a collection of defenders made the lead stand up. The Cardinals were limited to seven shots, including five on goal that Lambeck saved to preserve his first clean sheet of the 2011 season.

Wittenberg was credited with 13 shots in the game, including nine in the second half alone. McBride led with four shots. The Tigers were awarded five corner kicks to two for Otterbein.

The Tigers will put their modest three-game win streak on the line in a road test at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, at Ohio Northern.
