Declan McBride

PITTSBURGH, Pa. — The Wittenberg Tigers picked up their first win of the 2010 season with a dominating 1-0 victory over St. Vincent in the first game of the Carnegie Mellon Invitational.

The Tigers evened their record at 1-1 on the young season, heading into their final game of the road trip against Mount Union at noon on Sunday. The Bearcats dropped to 0-2 and will take on the host team on Sunday.

Wittenberg finished with a commanding 19-2 advantage in total shots. While the Tigers managed to put just one ball into the net - a one-touch shot from the top of the penalty box in the 63rd minute by junior midfielder Declan McBride (Surrey, England/Tasis) off a feed from senior forward Robbie Farquhar (Bexley, Ohio/Bexley) - they were stymied by five St. Vincent goalkeeper saves and three other defensive saves by other defenders.

Sophomore Brock Hicks (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany), freshman Kevin Bond (Columbus, Ohio/Bexley) and freshman Brian Boutin (Mount Vernon, Ohio/Mount Vernon) had headers cleared off the line in the 37th, 47th and 49th minutes, respectively. All of those opportunities came prior to St. Vincent's first shot on frame in the 52nd minute, which was saved by junior goalkeeper Michael Lambeck (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman), one of two saves on the day as he picked up his first clean sheet of the 2010 campaign.
