Tigers Win Opening NCAC Match 2-0 Over Denison

Spencer Hogue

GRANVILLE, Ohio — The Wittenberg men's soccer team got its 2010 North Coast Athletic Conference schedule off to a successful start Saturday night with a 1-0 win at Denison University, moving back to .500 at 4-4-2 overall and now boasting a 1-0-0 record in the NCAC.

Twenty-two minutes into the match, senior defender Spencer Hogue (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) scored the game's only goal and his first of the season with a header off a cross from senior forward Robbie Farquhar (Bexley, Ohio/Bexley). In the following 68 minutes, both teams held each other quiet, leaving Hogue's score as the difference-maker.

The Tigers posted just eight shots, compared to Denison's 19, but despite the Big Red's flurry of shots, junior goalkeeper Michael Lambeck (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman) made Hogue's goal stand up with eight saves throughout the match.

Hogue scored on his only shot of the game, while freshman defender Kevin Bond (Columbus, Ohio/Bexley) put both of his two shots on goal. Senior forward Tom Fisher (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) also shot twice, once on goal, and three other Tigers each had one shot.

The men return to their home pitch with a Tuesday, Sept. 28, match versus Cedarville at Edwards-Maurer Field beginning at 7 p.m.
