Tigers Fall To Wilmington 3-1 In Season Opener

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Wittenberg men's soccer team started the 2010 season on the road Wednesday night with a trip to Wilmington College and fell to the Quakers by a final score of 3-1. The Tigers take a 0-1 record into the Carnegie Mellon Invitational this weekend, first against St. Vincent on Friday, Sept. 3 at Noon, followed by a Noon match with Mount Union the next day.

Against Wilmington, the Tigers found themselves down 3-0 67 minutes in when freshman defender Kevin Bond (Columbus, Ohio/Bexley) found the net off a Quaker foul to put Wittenberg on the board.

Bond led all players with six shots, including a game-high four on goal. Junior midfielder Declan McBride (Surrey, England/Tasis) followed with four shots, one on target.

Senior forward Robbie Farquhar (Bexley, Ohio/Bexley) put two of his three shots on goal to help the Tigers outshoot the Quakers 19-17. Wittenberg also held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks, but Wilmington stopped 10 shots to keep the Tigers in check. Junior goalkeeper Michael Lambeck (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman) turned away four Quaker shots throughout his 90 minutes in front of the net.

Junior midfielder Steven Fitzpatrick (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson), junior forward Christian Stringer (Delaware, Ohio/Hayes), senior midfielder Nate Ayres (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) and senior forward Tom Fisher (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) all tallied one shot in the game.
