Tigers Win First Over Albion In Wittenberg Invitational

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Tigers may well have come away with a 5-0 victory over Albion Friday night at Edwards-Maurer Field, but they ended up happy with their first win of the season by a 2-0 margin in the second game of the 2009 Wittenberg Invitational. Wittenberg improved to 1-4-1 on the season, while Albion dropped to 1-4-0.

The Tigers connected on two goals, the game winning first provided by senior forward Brian Glenn (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy) thanks to a feed from junior forward Tom Fisher (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) in the 24th minute, and the second on a breakaway by freshman forward Marshall Rowland (Pewee Valley, Ky./South Oldham) in the 78th minute. The goals were Glenn's second of the season and Rowland's first.

Wittenberg came close on three other opportunities. Glenn and Fisher both fired shots off the left post in rapid succession in the game's 61st minute, and sophomore midfielder Declan McBride (Surrey, England/Tasis) appeared to score just before the match's clock expired, only to have the goal called off by the officials.

Despite being outshot by the Britons by a 14-10 mark, the Tigers converted two of three shots on goal to ensure the win. Albion put five shots on goal only to see all turned back by the sophomore goalkeeping pair of Michael Lambeck (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman) and David Rea (Rocky River, Ohio/Rocky River). Lambeck played the first period and saved one shot before leaving to play the field, putting Rea in the net to make four saves in the second period.

The Tigers continue to host the Wittenberg Invitational with two more games Saturday, Sept. 19, starting with a match between Otterbein and Albion at 2 p.m. and ending with the event's fourth match featuring Wittenberg and Calvin, set to begin at 4:30 p.m.
