Wittenberg Trips Up Against Muskingum

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - After a successful road trip, the Wittenberg Tigers were unable to keep the momentum Wednesday, losing a 2-1 thriller to Muskingum in their first home game since the season-opening Wittenberg Invitational.

The Tigers opened scoring just one minute into play on a connection from sophomore Matt Borland (Kettering, Ohio/Alter) to fellow sophomore Jimmy Thinnes (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle). Thinnes struck the ball low into the right corner and scored. In the 25th minute, the Muskies responded. After Wittenberg senior goalkeeper Adam Horrocks (Delaware, Ohio/Hayes) committed a foul in the box, the Muskies were rewarded with a penalty kick, which Steven Kreiener converted to tie the score.

The second half was an even battle until the Muskies broke through and scored in the 70th minute. Muskingum's goal was scored on a long range shot by Danny Quiroz. Right after the Muskies' goal, the Tigers had a chance to tie as junior Joe Zeller (Springfield, Ohio/North) missed an opportunity to score on a header off a corner kick by Kenny Proop (Charleston, W.Va./Catholic).

The game included a tremendous amoung of offense as the teams combined for 35 shots, with Muskingum holding a narrow 19-16 advantage. The Tigers have little time to pick themselves back up, however, as they have a pair of games scheduled over the weekend at the Wilmington Kiwanis Classic, starting with a 5 p.m. Friday date with perennial powerhouse Calvin.
