SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers were unable to wake up from a bad dream a year ago until it was too late as what had been a promising season turned sour with four straight losses to close the season. As the 2005 season winds to a close, the Tigers can only hope they aren't about to endure a repeat performance as they lost their second straight 1-0 game, this time to Allegheny.
Wittenberg dropped to 6-5-3 overall and, more importantly, 3-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. The Tigers started the NCAC campaign with three straight wins, but with a pair of 1-0 losses in the span of four days Wittenberg must get the ship righted quickly, starting with Wednesday's home game against Earlham.
After rallying for a 2-1 win at Oberlin last Saturday, the Tiger offense has come up empty. The Tigers were outshot 9-5 in the game, with several quality scoring opportunities going awry. The best chance for Wittenberg came midway through the second half as sophomore forward Joe Zeller had a header in the penalty box bounce off a defender and his follow-up shot was cradled by Allegheny goaltender Brian Manougian after a quick dive.
The Gators followed that up with the game-winning goal at the 18:31 mark of the second half. In a physical game, Allegheny got the best of things despite committing 18 fouls to Wittenberg's nine. Tiger goalkeeper Adam Horrocks was credited with seven saves in the game.
