SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers are now officially in uncharted territory. With Saturday's 6-0 win over the visiting Hiram Terriers, Wittenberg improved to 4-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, the best start in school history, and 7-7 overall.
This one was over fairly early. Sixteen minutes into the game, played in blustery, cold conditions before only the heartiest of fans, the Tigers took the lead on a pretty header by junior midfielder Matt Berry off a cross from sophomore midfielder Sebastian Missura, the first of his three helpers on the day. Thirteen minutes later it was sophomore forward Jason Sucher's turn as he placed a high arcing shot into the Hiram net after a long pass from sophomore forward David Ross down the sideline. Wrapping up the first half scoring, senior forward Jason Ziegler found the back of the net off a feed from Missura.
In the second half, despite liberal substitions by the Tigers, it was plenty more of the same. Junior forward Isaac Boye-Arthur scored a pair of goals, sandwiched around a tally for sophomore midfielder Eduardo Missura, with the assists credited to Sebastian Missura, Brian Mutton and Evan Ingram. For the game, Wittenberg outshot its visitors 24-14, although that is somewhat misleading since many of Hiram's scoring chances came with the game well out of reach.
In goal, freshman netminder Ben McAnnis-Entenman and sophomore Adam Horrocks shared the shutout with a combined six saves, although Horrocks was forced into several nice diving saves in the final minutes to preserve it.
Wittenberg is back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 20 at 4 p.m. at Bill Edwards Field. The Wabash Little Giants come calling in another key game for the Tigers, who have never made the NCAC Tournament in three previous tries. A win in that game will more the Tigers one step close to their goal of advancing to postseason play with just three regular season games to play.
