Wittenberg Falls 1-0 To Transylvania In Wilmington Kiwanis Classic

WILMINGTON, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers had the same number of chances as their counterparts from Transylvania in the first round of the Wilmington Kiwanis Classic. Unfortunately, of the 10 shots that Wittenberg attempted, none found the back of the net. Of the 10 shots that Transylvania took in the game, one second-half attempt hit paydirt and propelled the Pioneers past the Tigers by a score of 1-0.

The goal was scored in the game's 69th minute on a breakaway off a long pass. Tiger goalkeeper Adam Horrocks came out of his net in an attempt to stop the break, but Transylvania's Thomas Leffler scored anyway.

Horrocks finished with three saves in the game, compared to five for the Transylvania netminder. Three different Tigers' players attempted two shots in the game, and five were directed on goal, but all offensive forays were denied.

The game, which was originally scheduled for Friday but was postponed due to heavy rains in the area associated with Hurricane Ivan, dropped Wittenberg's record to 3-3 overall. The Tigers were supposed to play Wilmington Saturday, but those two teams will now hook up at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
