Wittenberg Falls in Double OT To Cedarville

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - For a short time early this season it appeared that the Wittenberg men's soccer team would get the monkey off its back, that disheartening burden of one-goal losses that has plagued the team for several years. But for the second time in the last three games, the Tigers lost by one goal, this time falling in most disappointing fashion 2-1 in double overtime to visiting Cedarville.

Action was fairly even for most of the game, although Cedarville dominated much of the statistics, with 18 shots to Wittenberg's nine. Much of that discrepancy came in the first half as the Yellow Jackets directed eight shots toward the Tiger net, compared to just one for Wittenberg. But that one was made to count, courtesy of a tremendous one-touch goal from the top of the penalty box by junior midfielder Levi Van Reeth that made the score 1-0 in the 27th minute of the game.

Thirteen minutes into the second half, that lead disappeared as Cedarville got a goal from Phil Ellis. After taking a long pass from David Adams, Ellis broke in on Tiger goaltender Ben McAnnis-Entenman, who stopped the initial shot but couldn't corral the rebound.

The game went into overtime and appeared headed for a tie as the play was very even and neither goaltender was credited with a save due to the lack of quality scoring chances. With 2:10 remaining in the second 10-minute session, however, Cedarville's Ken Davis broke through the left side of the box and his cross got through McAnnis-Entenman. It went right to Joe Zuerner, who knocked it home for the game-winner.

Wittenberg fell to 3-5 overall on the season. The Tigers round out the nonconference portion of the 2004 schedule with a game against Muskingum on Tuesday at home at 4:30 p.m.
