Wittenberg Continues Struggles; Lose in Second Overtime

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - For the second straight game the Wittenberg Tigers dropped a one-goal decision in overtime. Muskingum, controlling much of the second half and overtime action, handed the Tigers their second straight heart-breaking loss, 2-1. The Tigers now move into conference play with a record of 3-6.

With the sun shining down, both teams took the field looking to get back on the winning track. In the first half, Wittenberg seemed to be well on their way, as they controlled the game for most of the half. The Tigers limited the Muskies to only 3 shots, none of which ever threatened finding the net. Unfortunately the Tigers couldn't capitalize on their opportunites and took only five shots, despite controlling the ball primarily on Muskingum's side of the field.

The second half was a completely different story. The momentum changed almost as quickly as the weather. As a strong wind brought a slight chill over Bill Edwards Field, the Muskies took control of the game. Muskingum pressed the Tiger defense until finally putting in a goal in the 75th minute of the game. Down 1-0, the Tigers seemed to snap out of their offensive funk and pressed down the field. The Tigers were able to even up the score in the 84th minute of the game when freshman Bryan Lopes found the back of the net off a beautiful assist from senior Jason Ziegler. The Tiger offense had its chances in the closing moments of the game, missing two close-range shots at the net. With the score tied, the teams pressed on into overtime.

The first overtime saw little action as neither team was able to do much offensively. However, Muskingum didn't wait long to take control in overtime No. 2. After narrowly missing a goal off a corner kick, the Muskies received another chance as Wittenberg cleared the ball out of bounds. With five minutes showing on the clock, Muskingum sent a perfect corner kick into the box and the Muskies, making good on second chances, pushed a header through several Wittenberg defenders and past the Tiger goalkeeper to win the game in the 105th minute, 2-1.

The Wittenberg Tigers will try to put the first half of their season behind them, when they open NCAC play this weekend. The Tigers will travel to Allegheny on Saturday, October 2 to play a 1:30 p.m. match-up against the Gators.
