Men's Lacrosse drops tight 8-7 game at Oberlin

OBERLIN — The Wittenberg men's lacrosse team dropped a tight 8-7 game at Oberlin in North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday.

The Basics

  • Records: Wittenberg (4-3 overall, 0-3 NCAC), Oberlin (8-3 overall, 2-1 NCAC)

Stat Leaders

  • Senior Kody Gould (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) led the Wittenberg offense with four goals.
  • Sophomore Kyle Gould (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) added two goals.
  • Junior Connor Matthews (Columbus, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) tallied three points on one goal and two assists.
  • Sophomore Dillon McKeigue (Olmsted Township, Ohio/St. Edwards) grabbed a team-high four ground balls for the Tigers.
  • Sophomore Chase Singleton (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) played all 60 minutes in goal for Wittenberg and posted seven saves.
  • Jack Duffy and Ryan Blasberg led the Oberlin offense with one goal and one assist each.

The Game

  • Oberlin led 2-0 at the end of the first quarter.
  • Wittenberg answered with a 3-0 run to start the second quarter, as a pair of goals from Kody Gould bookended one from Kyle Gould to put the Tigers up 3-2 with 7:14 left in the period. Oberlin scored with 6:25 left in the quarter, and the teams went into halftime with the score tied at 3-all.
  • Oberlin and Wittenberg scored alternating goals in the third quarter en route to a 5-all tie with 11:37 left. Matthews and Kody Gould recorded the Tigers' goals in that span. The Yeomen capped the scoring in the period with a goal with five minutes left to take a 6-5 edge into the fourth.
  • A goal from Kyle Gould tied the score at 6-all with 13:07 left in the game, but Oberlin answered with back-to-back goals for an 8-6 lead with 11:33 remaining. Kody Gould scored with 3:05 left, but the Tigers were unable to get a tying goal to force overtime.
  • Wittenberg out-shot Oberlin by a 48-31 margin and forced 26 Yeomen turnovers.
  • Oberlin finished with a 33-29 edge in ground balls and won 10 of the 17 faceoffs.
