Men's Lacrosse improves to 2-0 with 14-9 win at Chatham

PITTSBURGH, Pa. — The Wittenberg men's lacrosse team improved to 2-0 on Tuesday with a 14-9 win at Chatham.

The Basics

Stat Leaders

  • Sophomore Dillon McKeigue (Olmsted Township, Ohio/St. Edward's) led Wittenberg with five goals.
  • Junior Connor Matthews (Columbus, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) added four goals.
  • Junior Zach Busby (Cedarburg, Wis./Cedarburg) and sophomore Kyle Gould (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) each tallied two goals and one assist for three points apiece.
  • Senior Kody Gould (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) scored one goal.
  • Junior Nathan Brown (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman) posted two assists to go with one from senior Holton Boehmer (Brighton, Mich./Brighton).
  • Freshman Charlie Frederick (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) tallied a team-best 10 ground balls.
  • Sophomore Chase Singleton (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) played all 60 minutes in goal for Wittenberg and recorded 10 saves to improve to 2-0 on the season.
  • Jacob Lubawy tallied a team-high five points on one goal and four assists for Chatham.

The Game

  • Chatham scored the first goal of the game, but Busby answered for Wittenberg to tie the score with 7:29 left in the first quarter.
  • Chatham retook the lead with a goal with 5:21 left in the opening quarter, but the Tigers scored seven straight goals going into the second quarter for an 8-2 edge with 4:17 left in the second period. Matthews scored three goals in that stretch to go with one each from Kody and Kyle Gould, McKeigue and Busby.
  • Wittenberg led 9-3 at halftime.
  • Chatham outscored Wittenberg 3-1 in the third quarter, and the Tigers took a 10-6 lead into the fourth.
  • The Tigers opened the fourth-quarter scoring with back-to-back goals from McKeigue for a 12-6 lead with 10:35 left in the game.
  • The teams alternated goals over the final 8:10 with Chatham capping the scoring with a goal with 2:03 left for the 14-9 final score.
  • Wittenberg out-shot Chatham by a 54-36 margin and won 14 of 26 faceoffs.
  • Chatham finished with a 34-30 edge in ground balls.
  • Wittenberg forced 17 Chatham turnovers.
