Tigers Clinch Share Of NCAC Title With Big Win At Wooster

WOOSTER, Ohio — With an 11-3 win in the rain and cold at Wooster, the Wittenberg Tigers clinched at least a share of their second straight North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) championship.

The only obstacle that remains between the Tigers, who are now 11-0 overall and 4-0 in league play, and the first outright NCAC title in program history is perennial powerhouse Ohio Wesleyan. Like last year, when the Battling Bishops spoiled the party with a win on their home turf, an OWU win would force a three-way tie for the top spot with Denison. The two teams will square off in Springfield at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 27.

Wooster, which fell to 4-8 overall and 1-3 in the NCAC, scored the game's first goal, but the Tigers answered with four in a row to end the first period. After the Scots scored the first two goals of the second quarter, Wittenberg buckled down on defense and didn't allow another Wooster tally. Meanwhile, the Tigers scored twice before intermission to take a 6-3 lead into the break and then found the back of the net five times in the second half to secure the victory.

Six different Wittenberg players scored in the game, led by senior Matt Snider (Cookeville, Tenn./Cookeville) with three goals. Senior Matt Lord (Pickerington, Ohio/North) added two goals — giving him 102 in his career, one short of the school record — and two assists.

Senior goalkeeper Mark DeOliveira (East Hanover, NJ/East Hanover) was credited with 10 saves in the game, and he also shared game honors in ground balls with five. Senior Ryan Spain (Concord, NH/Bishop Brady) also finished with five ground balls.
