Tigers Bounce Back With Win At Mount St. Joseph

CINCINNATI, Ohio — The Wittenberg Tigers showed some resiliency, putting together a solid four-quarter effort in a 14-9 victory at Mount St. Joseph.

The win moved Wittenberg back above the .500 mark at 2-1 on the young 2010 season, while Mount St. Joseph dropped to 0-2. It gave the Tigers momentum heading into their annual Spring Break trip to Clearwater, Fla., where Wittenberg will take on Potsdam State and Moravian.

The Tigers jumped on top, scoring the first three goals of the game. By halftime, the lead had expanded to 8-4, and the Tigers did just enough at both ends of the field to hold on for the 14-9 win over the final 30 minutes.

Junior Matt Lord (Pickerington, Ohio/North) led the offense, pouring in five goals. He was ably backed by six other goal-scorers, including freshman Alex Previte (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman), junior Danny Johnson (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill) and junior Mitch Cohagan (Pickerington, Ohio/North) with two tallies apiece. JuniorBrady Christensen (Medina, Ohio/Medina) led with two assists of the four credited to Wittenberg players in the game.

Johnson recorded three ground balls, while sophomore Michael Cocking (St. Louis, Mo./CBC) led the defensive effort with four. Sophomore goalkeeperSpencer Baker (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) recorded 17 saves in his first start of the 2010 season. Key to the win was a strong faceoff performance by freshman Elliot Avis (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids), who won 13-of-17 in the game.
