Tigers Fall To .500 With Loss To Washington & Lee

LEXINGTON, Va. — The Wittenberg men's lacrosse team fell to 1-1 overall on the young season following a 10-4 road loss to Washington & Lee on Saturday.

The Tigers developed an early deficit after allowing the Generals to build a 6-1 advantage in the first quarter. Wittenberg fought back with two unanswered goals in the second period, but Washington & Lee responded with three of their own in the third segment, and the game cruised to a conclusion with both teams picking up one goal in the fourth.

Senior Ted Winders (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township) led the Tigers with two goals on eight shots along with two groundballs. Winders' first goal opened the game's scoring, and his second completed the Tigers' second-period scoring. Junior Mitch Cohagan (Pickerington, Ohio/North) scored the first of that second-period sequence, and junior Matt Lord (Pickerington, Ohio/North) scored Wittenberg's final goal off an assist from junior Chris Gipson (Naperville, Ill./Neaqua Valley).

On defense, junior Dan Gaines (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and sophomore Michael Cocking (St. Louis, Mo./CBC) each picked up four groundballs and caused two turnovers to lead the team in those categories. In front of the net, junior Mark DeOliveira (East Hanover, NJ/East Hanover) picked up the loss, allowing six goals, while sophomore Spencer Baker (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) stopped eight shots and allowed four goals in the balance of the minutes in goal.

The Tigers return to action on Wednesday, March 3, in a 7 p.m. contest at the College of Mount St. Joseph.
